Our approach to development
We take an equitable, community-focused approach, carefully considering local circumstances and demographics to ensure our projects deliver meaningful, appropriate benefits for the communities we serve. Here are some of the ways we achieve that:
Supporting Nature
Our goal is to lead the global renewables industry in best practice when it comes to enhancing ecology and biodiversity at our solar and wind farms.
With thoughtful planning and ecological management, our sites can help restore ecosystems, improve soil health and support conservation goals alongside clean energy generation. Our solar farms can incorporate locally-adapted grasslands, indigenous pollinator-friendly plants and wildlife corridors creating safe havens for nature while aligning with national biodiversity goals.
Supporting farming
Importantly, our solar farms are designed to preserve agricultural land and support food security, with wide gaps between the solar arrays to allow for continued farming or sheep grazing between the panels.
Agrivoltaics presents a promising opportunity for solar farms in South Africa, offering a sustainable solution to the dual challenges of energy security and agricultural resilience. By integrating crop cultivation or sheep grazing, solar farms can optimise land use, enhance biodiversity and support rural economies.
South Africa's abundant sunlight and vast agricultural landscapes make it an ideal setting for agrivoltaic innovation, promoting food and energy production side by side while building climate resilience in farming communities.
supporting communities
We build lasting relationships with local communities near our developments, starting early in the development process and continuing throughout the project's life.
All our projects also offer community benefit funds for the life of the project, to support other sustainable and social initiatives tailored for the local area.
Our industry-leading Eden Education programme works with local schools to teach students about nature, climate and energy. Over 10,000 students globally have already benefited from the programme.
Eden Education is designed to provide an educational experience to South African school students, focusing on raising awareness about renewable energy, promoting STEM education, supporting sustainable development in local communities, and fostering environmental stewardship. Funding for each project is allocated to provide schools in the vicinity with resources, site visits, scholarships and interactive learning experiences.
