A reliable, affordable solution for South Africa
Renewable energy is now one of the most affordable and efficient options for new power generation, delivering significant savings over gas and traditional power sources. Globally, solar power is now over 40% cheaper than the cheapest fossil fuels (IRENA).
In South Africa, where frequent load shedding has disrupted businesses and communities, the need for diversified, locally-produced clean energy has never been greater.
ADDRESSING THE CLIMATE CRISIS
The global climate emergency and rise in extreme weather events – both worldwide and here in South Africa – are accelerating the shift to renewable energy. While the Integrated Resource Plan (IRP) does not set a net-zero target, it calls for substantial growth in renewable capacity to cut greenhouse gas emissions and meet the nation’s Paris Agreement commitments.
The IRP envisions 14.4 GW of new wind and 6 GW of new solar PV capacity by 2030. With electricity demand expected to rise year-on-year, South Africa must continue to expand its renewable energy mix to ensure a sustainable and reliable power supply.
BUILDING A RESILIENT FUTURE
Co-locating solar and/or wind generation with on-site battery storage systems (BESS) helps manage the variability of renewable power, making it possible to deliver consistent supplies of low-carbon energy. This integration is essential for creating a resilient, sustainable energy future for South Africa.
